German Politician of Turkish Origin

Sevim Dağdelen is a German politician of Turkish origin. She is a member of the Left Party and serves as a member of the Bundestag (German Parliament).

Background and Education

Dağdelen was born into a Turkish immigrant family. She graduated from high school in 1997 and began studying law at the University of Marburg. She later studied at the University of Adelaide (2001-2002) and the University of Cologne.

Political Involvement

From 1993 to 2001, Dağdelen was a member of the Youth Committee of the Federation of Democratic Workers' Associations (FDA/DIDF). She joined the FDA's Executive Committee in February 2003. In March 2005, she co-founded the Federation of Migrants in Germany.

Career

Before entering politics, Dağdelen worked as a translator. She also contributed to various German and Turkish media outlets.

Political Breakthrough

In 2005, Dağdelen was elected to the Bundestag, representing a constituency in North Rhine-Westphalia. She became a member of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee.

Notable Achievements

In 2019, Dağdelen met with Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Her request led the Bundestag's scientific committee to confirm the illegitimacy of the agreement signed between Turkey and the Sarraj government in Libya. The agreement violated international maritime law by ignoring the economic zones of Greek islands and Cyprus. Dağdelen condemned Turkey's actions, stating, "Anyone who, like the Turkish President, violates international law in the region and supports Islamist terrorism there with aggressive foreign policy cannot be our partner."
