Early Life and Education

Kay Bailey Hutchison was born on July 22, 1943, in Galveston, Texas. She grew up in the nearby town of La Marque and graduated from high school there. She then attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her degree in 1967.

Political Career

Hutchison began her political career in 1972 when she was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. She served in that body until 1976, when she became Vice Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

In 1990, Hutchison was elected Texas State Treasurer. She held that office until 1993, when she was elected to the United States Senate to fill the seat vacated by Lloyd Bentsen, who had been appointed Secretary of the Treasury.

U.S. Senator

Hutchison won the 1993 special election, becoming the first woman to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. She was reelected in 1994, 2000, and 2006. She did not seek reelection in 2012, and was succeeded by Ted Cruz.

Later Career

After leaving the Senate, Hutchison joined the law firm Bracewell & Giuliani in Dallas as a senior counsel.

Personal Life

Hutchison is married to Ray Hutchison, a Dallas lawyer and politician. She has two adopted children, Houston Taylor (son) and Catherine Bailey (daughter). Ray Hutchison has two daughters from a previous marriage, Brenda and Julia.
