Early Life and Family
Dina Titus, born on May 23, 1950, in Thomasville, Georgia, grew up in Tifton. Her family has a rich political lineage: her paternal great-great-grandfather, James Seward, served in the U.S. Congress and Georgia State Senate, while her father was involved in local government. Her maternal ancestors hailed from Greece, and her grandfather, Arthur Katonis, instilled in her a love for Greek culture.
Education and Academic Career
Titus graduated from the College of William & Mary with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. She went on to earn a Master of Arts from the University of Georgia and a Doctor of Philosophy from Florida State University. After a tenure at the University of North Texas, she settled in Nevada.
From 1977 to 2011, Titus served as a professor of political science at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She created and continues to coordinate UNLV's Legislative Internship Program, providing students with hands-on experience in the Nevada State Legislature.
Political Career
Titus entered politics in 1988 as a Nevada State Senator, representing the 7th District. She became the Senate Minority Leader from 1993 to 2008. In 2009, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Nevada's 3rd District. She currently represents the 1st District, having been elected in 2013.
Personal Life and Family
Titus is married to Thomas C. Wright, a retired UNLV professor specializing in Latin American history. Together, they enjoy traveling the world. Her younger sister, Rho Hudson, is a professor of special education at the College of Southern Nevada.
