Philip Seymour Hoffman was an American film and theater actor, as well as a talented director. He first appeared on television in 1991, starring in the popular series "Law & Order," but the following year he appeared in four feature films, including the remarkable film "Scent of a Woman."

Hoffman was born on July 23, 1967, in Rochester, New York, to Marilyn O'Connor, a civil rights lawyer, and Gordon Hoffman, the executive director of Xerox. He had two sisters, Jill and Emily, as well as a brother, Gordy Hoffman, who is a popular screenwriter. When Hoffman was nine years old, his parents divorced, which deeply affected him and led to a period of depression.

Hoffman developed an interest in the arts from an early age, which later turned into a passion and then a firm decision to become a professional actor. He landed his first role in 1982, in the television project "M*A*S*H." A few years later, he enrolled in the summer school for the arts at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York.
