Shaliqo Bekas: A Kurdish Renaissance Man

Early Life and Education

Shaliqo Bekas was born on August 5, 1956, in Tbilisi, Georgia, into a Kurdish (Yezidi) family. Despite his lack of formal education, Bekas found sanctuary in the art of cinema and theater. His passion for acting and filmmaking led him to pursue his dreams, despite the challenges faced by Kurds in the Soviet Union.

Military Service and Theatrical Beginnings

During his military service, Bekas honed his skills at the army theater, showcasing his talent in multiple roles and even co-directing a play. After completing his service, Bekas studied at the Theater School under A. R. Enukashvili, gaining experience at the Russian Youth Theater and the Griboyedov Theater.

Establishment of the Kurdish National Theater

Bekas's lifelong aspiration to establish a Kurdish National Theater bore fruit in 1979. Under the leadership of poet Jardoe Asad, the group staged its first performance. Although faced with resistance from authorities, the theater persisted, with Bekas as its driving force.

Artistic Contributions

Bekas played a pivotal role in the theater's fourteen-year existence, directing, translating, and starring in numerous productions. His most notable work, the tragicomedy "Cursed by God," premiered in 1988. Beyond the theater, Bekas authored numerous sketches, humorous pieces, and one-act plays.

Post-Theater Ventures

In 1989, Bekas founded an amateur film studio, but economic difficulties prevented its operation. Undeterred, he established a theater of satire and humor, which produced five successful comedies written by Bekas himself.

Struggles for a Kurdish Theater in Moscow

Since 1994, Bekas has spearheaded efforts to establish a Kurdish theater in Moscow. Despite setbacks in 1994, 1997, and 2000, his determination remained unwavering. In 2007, the troupe resumed work on "Cursed by God," premiering the play in 2008.

Continued Success and Recognition

Bekas's artistic journey continued with the premiere of "Roses Without Thorns" in 2012. His productions toured throughout the Kurdish diaspora, including a successful run in Diyarbakir, Turkey, the unofficial capital of Greater Kurdistan. In 2013, the Moscow-based Kurdish troupe showcased "Hazgini" to critical acclaim.

Legacy and Impact

Shaliqo Bekas is a towering figure in Kurdish theater. Through his unwavering dedication, he has preserved Kurdish culture and identity, inspiring generations of artists and audiences. His contributions to the Kurdish arts have left an indelible mark on the Kurdish diaspora and beyond.
