Shams Tabrizi, a prominent Azerbaijani mystic, theologian, and philosopher, was born in Tabriz. From a young age, he showcased exceptional intellectual abilities. Legend has it that upon reading a verse of the Quran, he exclaimed, "From now on, my name is Shams."

Shams pursued knowledge relentlessly, studying under the renowned Sufi master Shaykh Abubakr bin Ismail Tirmazi. He later embarked on a spiritual journey, seeking guidance from numerous Sufi saints and scholars.

Meeting with Rumi and Life in Konya

In 1234, Shams Tabrizi traveled to Damascus, where he first encountered the celebrated Persian poet Jalaluddin Rumi. Their subsequent meeting in Konya in 1243 proved transformative for both men. Shams sparked a profound spiritual awakening in Rumi, leading to a close friendship and intense discussions that lasted for months.

However, this bond aroused envy among some of Rumi's followers, who conspired to harm Shams. In 1244, Shams mysteriously disappeared, leaving Rumi devastated. Despite extensive searches, Rumi was never able to find his friend.
