Biography of Shane Koyczan

Shane Koyczan is a contemporary poet from Canada, known for his unique ability to combine the art of poetry with modern graphic technologies. Upon first glance, it is clear that Shane is one of those people who always stands out. He is of a stocky build, with a large beard, making him a walking caricature of himself. However, this initial impression fades away as soon as he starts speaking. It is not just his strong voice and magnificent delivery, but the words he speaks, his meticulously crafted speech and superb style. Whether it is a joke, a personal story, or a television news report, Shane's words transform everything into poetry, whether he intends it or not.

Shane has admitted that he ran away from a writing career since childhood: "I was asked in school about my future profession, but as soon as they heard my answer, they laughed and told me to think realistically. And every time a new teacher in school asked us about our desired future, they shattered a new dream. And I... I came to what I ran away from - to poetry." It is worth noting that the topic of school became a dominant theme in Koyczan's work. His most famous poem, "To This Day," is dedicated to the impact of bullying in school on a person's life. Based largely on his own experiences and featuring characters who have lived and are still living on this planet, the poem deeply touches the soul of every listener. Each time Shane performs the poem himself, those three sheets of paper become a real spectacle that looks different every time.

Soon after writing the poem, Shane founded his project aimed at helping children who have suffered from cruelty in school. The idea for a video for the project was simple: an animated film accompanied by the reading of the poem. As soon as the idea hit the Internet, hundreds of animators from all over the world started working on their own videos. The final version became the product of the imagination of over 70 designers and animators from Europe, America, South America, Asia, Africa, and many other corners of the world. They all worked for free, so that other children would not experience what they had gone through.

However, "To This Day" is not the only work by Shane. To this day, he has published three books. Every month, Shane gives lectures in schools in Canada and America, urging children to pay attention to those whose lives are made worse by cruelty in schools. Koyczan's creativity is highly recognized in Canada. He performed at the opening of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics with the poem "We are more," which showcased a new image of Canada to the guests.

Nevertheless, every time you see Shane on stage, you can't help but fear that he might forget the text or become embarrassed in front of the audience. However, this never happens. Instead, you can witness a tearful audience when the last lines of his poem are recited: "And our whole life is a balance, in which there is more beauty than pain."
