Shannon Barke was born on November 7, 1980, in Reno, Nevada. Raised in Tahoe City, California, she embarked on her skiing journey at the tender age of three, exploring every ski trail around Lake Tahoe.

At 12 years old, Barke's passion for freestyle skiing was ignited. While participating in a local competition, she caught the attention of Ray de Vries, a family friend and avid freestyle enthusiast. Recognizing her athleticism and fearlessness, he encouraged Barke to pursue the sport.

Throughout her school years, Barke excelled not only in skiing but also in softball, soccer, water skiing, and motorcycling. She played in a marching band and a jazz ensemble, displaying a diverse range of talents.

As high school drew to a close, Barke faced a dilemma: pursue a career in music or sports. However, her unexpected victory at the 1998 U.S. Freestyle Championships sealed her destiny.
