Early Life and Education
Sharif Atkins was born on January 29, 1975, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His family, including his mother Jacqueline, father David, and sister Makeba, relocated to Chicago when Atkins was six years old. He attended Whitney Young Magnet High School and later earned a Bachelor's degree in Theatre Arts from Northwestern University.
Early Career
After graduating in 1997, Atkins worked as a set dresser and made minor appearances in Chicago-based television productions such as "Early Edition" and "Light It Up." He subsequently moved to Los Angeles, secured an agent, and began landing small roles in television series like "That's Life," "The District," and "Arliss."
Breakthrough with "ER"
In 2000, Atkins impressed director John Wells in the television series "The Big Time." Wells cast him as Dr. Michael Gallant in the popular medical drama "ER," where Atkins starred from 2001 to 2003.
Television Success
Following his departure from "ER," Atkins continued to star in television series, including "Eve," "The 4400," "Numb3rs," "Close to Home," and "In Justice." He also had a significant role as a detective in the television film "Hawaii."
Return to "ER" and Other Projects
Atkins briefly reprised his role on "ER" in 2005 and 2006 as a guest star. He also appeared in the feature film "Paved with Good Intentions" (2006), the film "Privacy Policy" (2007), and the television series "Raising the Bar" (2008).
Later Career
Atkins continued to appear in television series, playing Gary Navarro, a telepath, in "4400" and Special Agent Clinton Jones in "White Collar" (2009-2014). He also portrayed Assistant United States Attorney Rivers in "The Good Wife" and has had roles in "Criminal Minds" and "CSI: Miami."
