Biography of Sharon Elizabeth Hugeny

Sharon Elizabeth Hugeny was born on February 29, 1944, in Los Angeles, California. Growing up, she was an intelligent, calm, and impressionable child who preferred books and music to the frivolous games of her peers. Sharon had a younger brother and sister, born in 1950 and 1957, respectively. At the age of 14, she wrote a play that was later performed by the drama club at San Fernando State College. Her parents, who had experienced World War II, were loving but strict towards their three children. Any boy who wanted to ask their eldest daughter on a date had to endure at least two interrogations and a car inspection before Sharon was allowed to go out with him.

However, when a talent scout noticed 15-year-old Sharon's performance in the play "Blue Jeans" at a modest theater, her parents gave her permission to meet with producer Delmer Daves and approved the contract offered by Warner Brothers studio. On her 16th birthday, Sharon signed a seven-year contract. Soon after, she started appearing in small roles in TV series such as "Colt .45," "Lawman," and "Maverick."

In 1961, while filming the romantic teen drama "Parrish," Sharon, whose beauty was compared to Elizabeth Taylor's, met actor Robert Evans, and they fell in love. Despite the significant age difference (Sharon was only 17 while Evans was 31), they got engaged and married within two weeks. However, their marriage was doomed from the start. Sharon, although mature for her age, was treated by her husband as a child rather than a wife. Things took a turn for the worse when Evans relocated to New York for his clothing business, taking Sharon thousands of miles away from her family, friends, and career. Warner Brothers studio suspended her contract. Within six months of their wedding, the couple traveled to Mexico for a quick divorce.

Unfortunately, Sharon's career suffered greatly and never recovered. She became one of the many actresses of the 1960s who possessed extraordinary beauty and immense acting talent but did not have the opportunity to showcase their outstanding qualities. Sharon rarely appeared in public until the mid-1970s, except for a few modest television roles, and little is known about her life during that time.

In April 1968, the actress got married for the second time to photographer Raymond Ross, who was three years younger than her. Their son, Shaun Aaron Ross, was born in December of that year. They divorced in June 1974. Later, it seemed like things were looking up for Sharon when she married Gordon Cornell Layne, a producer, and songwriter who was 13 years older than her. In 1977, she was offered a new lucrative contract, but tragedy intervened. Sharon was hit by a speeding police car and miraculously survived, but she never acted again.

After a long period of rehabilitation, Sharon and Gordon moved to the peaceful neighborhood of Lake Arrowhead, California, where they lived until her death. She passed away on July 3, 1996, at the age of 52, from cancer. Gordon Layne remained in Lake Arrowhead, directing productions at the local theater and writing a new book on acting.
