A Unique Christmas Tradition: Handmade Ornaments with Cremated Ashes

Shirley Holdsworth: The Bereavement Craftswoman

British craftswoman Shirley Holdsworth has found a unique way to bring together the joy of Christmas with the remembrance of loved ones who have passed away. The 52-year-old Burnley resident handcrafts Christmas ornaments that incorporate the ashes of the deceased into their design.

Symbolism and Symbolism

Holdsworth's ornaments often take the form of translucent heart-shaped baubles, symbolically representing the bond between the living and the dead. "I do it for people who have lost sons, daughters, mums, and dads," Holdsworth explains. "I've even made ones for people's dogs."

A Labor of Love

Creating each ornament is a meticulous process that requires patience and care. Holdsworth personally collects small amounts of cremated ashes from her clients and places them in a tiny vial, which is then sealed inside the transparent heart. The ornaments are adorned with delicate feathers and engraved with the name of the deceased loved one.

A Meaningful Service

Holdsworth charges a modest fee of £3 (approximately $4) per ornament, which covers only the cost of materials. "It's all local people," she says. "It makes them happy, what I do. I don't make anything out of it from passing people away."

Inspiration and Acceptance

Holdsworth began crafting her unusual ornaments in May 2016 following the death of her father. "It felt a bit strange at first," she admits. "But now I'm used to it. I get a lot of satisfaction from helping people who have lost somebody they love."

Respecting Boundaries

While most of Holdsworth's clients have welcomed her services, her mother has declined to have her husband's ashes enshrined in one of her ornaments. "She doesn't like seeing ashes," explains Holdsworth, who has now created over 75 unique Christmas keepsakes.
