Shota Managadzes Early Life and Education

Shota Managadzes was born on March 19, 1903, in Kutaisi, Soviet Georgia. He initially pursued higher education at Tbilisi University before transitioning to artistic studies. In 1926, he completed his training at the Jabadari Theater Studio in Tiflis. Later, he graduated from the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in 1938.

Theater Career

Before embarking on his cinematic endeavors, Managadzes established a notable career in the theater. He served as the director and artistic director of the Kutaisi Drama Theater from 1927 to 1928. Subsequently, he held similar positions at the Tbilisi TRAM (1929-1931), the Georgian Theater of the Red Army (1932), and the Republican TRAM (1934-1936). These experiences honed his directorial skills.

Filmmaking at Georgia-Film

In 1938, Managadzes joined the Tbilisi Film Studio, later known as "Georgia-Film," as a film director. He remained associated with this studio for the rest of his professional life.

Recognition and Legacy

Managadzes' contributions to the world of cinema were recognized with prestigious awards. He received second prize at the 1958 All-Union Film Festival for his artistic films. In 1966, he was bestowed the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR. Additionally, he was honored with the Komsomol Prize of Georgia in 1974.

Later Years and Passing

Shota Managadzes passed away on July 21, 1977, leaving behind a significant legacy in both theater and film. He was laid to rest at the Saburtalo Cemetery in Tbilisi, Georgia.
