Arieti was born in Pisa, Italy, into a family of physicians. His father and grandfather had been medical doctors. He completed his studies at the Liceo Galileo in Pisa in 1932 and graduated from the University of Pisa in 1938.

Immigration to the United States

The rise of Mussolini's fascist regime forced Arieti, an ethnic Jew, to flee to the United States. He became a professor at the New York University School of Medicine and taught psychoanalysis at the William Alanson White Institute.

Landmark Publication: "Interpretation of Schizophrenia"
