Early Life and Education
Silvia Radu was born in 1972 in the city of Hincesti, Moldova. Her parents, Vasile and Vera Cocu, faced adversity during her grandfather's deportation to Siberia in 1949. Silvia's family eventually returned to Hincesti in 1955.
During her school years, Silvia excelled in languages, studying both Russian and English. Her proficiency in English led to her participation in a national language Olympiad in Balti. Silvia pursued higher education at the State University of Moldova (1988-1993), where she studied foreign languages and economic law (1998-2000). She also attended the Academy of Public Administration of the Moldovan Government (1995-1997) and earned a degree in Advanced Management from the Business School of Navarra (IESE) in Barcelona, where she was elected class president.
Professional Career
Silvia Radu began her career in 1995 as a Spanish language teacher at the Moldovan State University. She subsequently joined the government's Department of Energy and Energy Resources as head of its international relations department. In 1999, she became involved with the state-owned electric transportation company "Moldtranselectro" before transitioning to the private sector.
At "Gas Natural Fenosa Moldova," Silvia played a pivotal role in establishing a clear and transparent framework for interactions with stakeholders. She promoted open communication with customers through weekly "Open Door Days" and implemented principles of gender equality, ensuring that 50% of the company's board members were female. Under her leadership, numerous social projects were initiated, including a mentorship program for young professionals, innovative training technologies, and social inclusion programs for individuals with disabilities. Silvia also championed energy efficiency initiatives.
Political Career
On November 6, 2017, Silvia Radu was appointed interim mayor of Chisinau. In 2018, she was nominated as Minister of Health, Labor, and Social Protection. However, her nomination faced opposition from President Igor Dodon, leading to a temporary suspension of his presidency by the Constitutional Court. On September 25, 2018, Silvia Radu was sworn in as Minister by Parliament Chairman Adrian Candu.
Personal Life and Activism
Silvia Radu married Virgil Radu, a foreign language student, in 1992. Together, they have three children: a son and two daughters. Silvia is an avid supporter and promoter of Moldovan artists, organizing and sponsoring exhibitions of their work. She is also an Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Spain in Moldova.
