Swiss Politician, President, and Diplomat
Emil Klöti was a prominent Swiss politician, president, and diplomat. He was a member of the Radical Democratic Party and hailed from a family of influential bankers and politicians.
Early Life and Education
Born into a family of wealth and privilege, Emil Klöti received an exceptional education. He attended the Stetten Institute in Remshal, the Polytechnic University in Karlsruhe, and the University of Stuttgart.
In 1850, he married Barbara von Salis-Soglio, with whom he had five children. His family played a significant role in his political and public life.
Political Career
Klöti's political journey began in 1853 when he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Grisons. He later served in the National Council of Switzerland from 1863 onwards.
Klöti rose through the political ranks and was elected president of the National Council in 1879 and 1880. In 1881, he was elected president of Switzerland, a position he held until 1882.
Diplomatic Service
Following his presidency, Klöti stepped down from politics and was appointed Swiss ambassador to Italy in 1883. He served as Italy's diplomatic representative for 12 years until 1895.
During his diplomatic tenure, Klöti played a key role in strengthening the relationship between Switzerland and Italy. His service was marked by diplomatic skill and international cooperation.
