Early Life and Education
Patricia Helen Kelly was born into a Catholic Irish family in England. Her grandfather was a member of the Irish Republican Army in the 1920s. She spent her early childhood in Ireland and later moved to the United Kingdom. Kelly studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford University (1989) and graduated from the London School of Economics (1992).
Professional Career
Kelly began her professional career as an economics reporter for The Guardian newspaper. In 1994, she joined the Bank of England as a deputy head of its inflation forecasting team. After leaving the Bank in 1996, she married and had four children.
Political Career
Kelly was first elected to Parliament in 1997. She held various ministerial positions in the Labour government, including Economic Secretary to the Treasury (2001-2002), Financial Secretary to the Treasury (2002-2004), Secretary of State for Education and Skills (2004-2006), Minister for Women (2006-2007), Minister for Communities and Local Government (2006-2007), and Secretary of State for Transport (2007-2008). She left Parliament in 2010.
Personal and Religious Affiliations
Kelly is a member of the Catholic organization Opus Dei. She is married and has four children.
