Simone Pepe: Italian Football Legend
Early Life and Career BeginningsSimone Pepe was born in Ortona, Italy, but spent his childhood in Carrara. He embarked on his football journey with Empoli FC, but only made four appearances for the first team. Subsequently, Pepe moved to Brescia Calcio, joining their youth squad under Luciano De Paola's guidance.
Scottish Stint
Seeking further opportunities, Pepe briefly played for Livingston FC in Scotland. However, he struggled to secure a place in the team's lineup.
Return to Brescia and Olympic Glory
In 2002, Pepe returned to Brescia. The following season, he established himself as a regular starter. His impressive performances earned him a call-up to Italy's Under-21 squad, with whom he clinched a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics.
Serie A Success and Relegation
During the 2004/2005 season, Brescia was relegated to Serie B. Despite this setback, Pepe remained a key player for the club, except for a period under Rolando Maran, who preferred other options.
Lazio Triumphs
In 2007, Pepe joined Lazio as a free agent, signing a five-year contract. His first season with the "Biancocelesti" was marred by a severe injury that led to plantar fasciitis and required surgery. The following season, however, brought redemption. Pepe helped Lazio win their first Coppa Italia title, coming on as a substitute in the 80th minute. He also triumphed in the Supercoppa Italiana in August.
