Early Life and Family

Sloan Stephens was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to John Stephens, a professional American football player, and Sybil Smith, a swimmer. Despite being raised by her mother in their early years, Stephens reconnected with her father at age 13 and maintained a close relationship with him until his untimely demise in 2009.

Junior Career

Stephens's tennis journey began in the ITF junior circuit, where she soared to the 5th-ranked position by August 10, 2009. She made it to the finals of the US Open alongside Mallory Burdette and reached the semifinals of the Orange Bowl Grade A tournament.

Her impressive performances continued in 2009, as she triumphed at the USTA International Spring Championships (Grade 1) in both singles and doubles, before embarking on her first Grand Slam junior tournament at the French Open. Reaching the semifinals in Paris, Stephens's run ended at the hands of Kristina Mladenovic. She also reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, losing to the same opponent.

Professional Debut and Early Struggles

Stephens turned professional in 2010, but her initial attempts at the BNP Paribas Open and the following year's tournament proved challenging, resulting in early exits. However, she secured her first ITF singles title at the Camparini Gioielli Cup in 2011.

Breakthrough and Ranking Rise

Stephens's breakthrough came in 2011 at the French Open, where she qualified for the main draw and reached the second round. She also made it to the second round of Wimbledon and reached her first WTA Tour quarterfinal at the San Diego Open, losing to Andrea Petkovic. These accomplishments propelled her to the 125th spot in the WTA rankings.
