A Brazilian Miracle: Baby Survives Seven Scorpion Stings
A Terrifying DiscoveryIn the northeastern Bahia region of Brazil, a three-day-old baby girl named Sofia narrowly escaped death after a gruesome encounter with a deadly yellow scorpion. While bathing her daughter, Fernanda Ferreira, 25, placed a fresh diaper on baby Sofia. Moments later, she noticed the infant becoming limp and foaming at the mouth.
Rushed to the Hospital
Frantic, Ferreira rushed Sofia to the hospital. To her horror, doctors unswaddled the baby and discovered a scorpion clinging to her umbilical cord. The arachnid had stung the child an astonishing seven times.
Multiple Doses of Antivenom Saved Her Life
Doctors explained that Sofia would likely have succumbed to her wounds if not for the immediate administration of multiple doses of antivenom within the first two hours. Ferreira, who also has two other children, recalled, "Sofia became weak and apathetic. She couldn't breastfeed and was having difficulty breathing. I thought she had indigestion. I never imagined there could be a scorpion in her diaper stinging her repeatedly."
Doctors Shocked by the Discovery
Hospital staff in the city of Vitoria da Conquista quickly administered six doses of anti-corticosteroid serum, saving the baby's life. The pediatrician who examined Sofia described being shocked by the sight of the eight-legged creature, still alive and attached to the baby's umbilical stump. "I panicked," said Dr. Camila Mirante. "I was too scared to remove the scorpion myself and ran to call the security guard for help."
Discharged After Three Days
After spending three days in intensive care, the now three-week-old Sofia was finally discharged from the hospital, showing no further signs of distress. "My husband, Mango, and I cried because we thought our baby would die," Ferreira admitted. She suspects the scorpion entered their bedroom through a drainpipe and crawled into the cupboard where Sofia's diapers were stored.
Family Relocates Due to Safety Concerns
Following the incident, the family decided to leave their home and relocate to a relative's house. "We're too terrified to return because the risk of another scorpion attack on our children is too high," Ferreira explained. "The fact that Sofia survived without any sequelae means she was meant to be with us. She's a true gift from heaven."
Yellow Scorpions: A Deadly Threat
Yellow scorpions are the deadliest in Brazil, and the South American country recorded 184 scorpion-related deaths in 2017 alone.
