Biography of Sofiko Chiaureli

Sofiko Chiaureli is an actress who has played more than 100 roles in theater and film over the course of her career. She was born on May 21, 1937, in a small town called Pikris in Georgia. Her parents, Mikhail Chiaureli and Veriko Andzhaparidze, were both renowned actors. Chiaureli grew up in a creative household, surrounded by the arts.

Chiaureli's father was a talented artist, sculptor, and musician, who eventually became a respected director. Her mother, Veriko Andzhaparidze, was a famous tragic actress, recognized as one of the best actresses of the 20th century by the Academy of Arts in England.

Chiaureli had two brothers, Otar and Ramaz, who also pursued careers in the arts. Otar became a documentary filmmaker, while Ramaz studied directing and eventually became a theater director. Unfortunately, both of Chiaureli's brothers passed away at a young age.

In 1955, Chiaureli married Georgy Shengelaya, a fellow student at the State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. They had two sons together, Nikolay and Alexander, who also became involved in the arts.

Chiaureli graduated from the State Institute of Cinematography in 1960 and decided to return to her beloved Tbilisi, where she joined the Koté Marjanishvili State Academic Theatre, the theater where her mother had performed. From that point on, Chiaureli divided her time between theater and film.

Throughout her career, Chiaureli has played more than 100 roles in theater and film. Some of her most memorable film roles include Tasia in "Different Times" (1962), Mzekala in "Hevsurian Ballad" (1965), and Sofiko in "Don't Grieve" (1969). She has received numerous awards and accolades for her performances, including the State Prize of the USSR in 1980.

In addition to her acting career, Chiaureli has been involved in politics and served as a deputy in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1974 to 1979. She is also the co-founder of the Veriko Andzhaparidze One Actor Theatre, which is located in her home in Tbilisi.

Chiaureli currently lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia, and continues to be active in both theater and film.
