Early Life and Education
Leonid Natanovich Krestinskywas born into a Jewish family in the Russian Empire.
He joined the Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) in 1918 and served as a commissar in the Red Army from 1920 to 1925. After leaving the army, Krestinsky studied at the Institute of Red Professors and later became head of its preparatory department.
Political and Economic Career
In 1930, Krestinsky began working in the Planning and Economic Department of the Supreme Council of the National Economy (VSNKh). In 1932, he was appointed head of the planning department of the People's Commissariat of Heavy Industry. He served as a member of the Commissariat and the Council of the People's Commissar of Heavy Industry.
In 1935, Krestinsky was elected to the Central Executive Committee of the USSR (VTSIK). The following year, he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the State Bank of the USSR, making him a member of the Council of Labor and Defense (STO) and Deputy People's Commissar of Finance.
Arrest and Execution
On September 11, 1937, Krestinsky was arrested on charges of participation in a counterrevolutionary terrorist organization. He was sentenced to death by the USSR Supreme Court on March 19, 1938, and executed on July 28, 1938.
Legacy
Krestinsky's contributions to the Soviet economy and his role as Chairman of the State Bank of the USSR have been overshadowed by his tragic end during the Great Purge. His life and career provide insights into the political and economic dynamics of the Soviet Union during the Stalin era.
