Sonam Kapoor, a Bollywood actress, has rapidly ascended to stardom. Despite initial box-office failures, her talent and determination have earned her critical acclaim and the Filmfare Award for Best Female Actor. Today, she represents leading brands like L'Oreal and Anant.

Early Life

Born on June 9, 1985, in Chembur, Sonam Kapoor hails from a prominent Indian film family. Her father, Anil Kapoor, is a renowned actor. Her mother, Sunita Kapoor, is a former model. Sonam also has a sister, Rhea, and a brother, Harshvardhan.

Kapoor's family includes a constellation of established Bollywood stars. Her grandfather, Surinder Kapoor, was a film producer. Her paternal and maternal uncles and aunts are successful actors and producers. Her cousins, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, have also made notable marks in the industry.

Growing up, Sonam attended Arya Vidya Mandir School in Juhu and later studied at the United World College of South East Asia in Singapore for two years. She then pursued a degree in Economics and Political Science at the University of East London.

Film Career

Before embarking on an acting career, Kapoor worked as an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the film "Black." She shared assistant directing duties with actor Ranbir Kapoor.

Sonam made her acting debut in "Saawariya" (2007), again directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Based on "White Nights," the film featured Ranbir Kapoor as her co-star. Although the film underperformed at the box office, it garnered international acclaim, earning Sonam several award nominations, including the Stardust Award.

In 2009, she starred in "Delhi-6," opposite Abhishek Bachchan. Similar to her debut film, "Delhi-6" failed commercially but received positive reviews from critics. It was screened at the Venice and Dubai film festivals and earned Kapoor an Asian Film Award nomination. Notably, the film featured no dance sequences, which is unusual for Indian films.

Sonam's breakthrough came with the 2010 romantic comedy "I Hate Luv Storys." Co-starring Imran Khan, the film became a critical and commercial success, propelling her career to a new level.

In the same year, she appeared in "Aisha," an adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma." Despite receiving mixed reviews, Sonam's performance was praised. She was nominated for a Golden Kela Award for Worst Female Actor.

2011 brought two films: "Thank You" and "Mausam." The former was panned by critics, while the latter underperformed at the box office. However, "Mausam" gained critical appreciation and was screened at the Chicago Film Festival.

2012 proved to be a disappointing year for Kapoor. "Players," an adaptation of "The Italian Job," was a critical and commercial failure. However, it was significant for its unconventional locations, including Russia, New Zealand, and the North Pole.

In 2013, Kapoor's star shone brightly in two films. "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag" saw her alongside Farhan Akhtar, and the film was declared India's Best Film of the Year. She followed this with "Raanjhanaa," co-starring Dhanush. Her portrayal of Zoe earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Actor.

2014 brought "Khoobsurat," where Kapoor played Mili Chakravarthi, a girl who falls in love with a prince. The film received a moderate rating of 2.5 out of 5.

Beyond her acting roles, Kapoor has appeared in music videos for Coldplay's "Hymn for the Weekend" and Beyoncé's "Hymn for the Weekend." In the latter, she makes a memorable appearance running down a hillside while throwing flower petals.

Personal Life

Kapoor's personal life is largely shielded from the public eye. However, that has not stopped rumors from circulating.

After "Saawariya," she was linked to her co-star, Ranbir Kapoor. Later, rumors spread of a relationship with "I Hate Luv Storys" director Punit Malhotra. Both speculations were denied by Kapoor.

Prior to entering the film industry, Kapoor lost 30 kilograms on a strict diet.

In 2009, Kapoor participated in a charity fashion show. In 2012, she asked her fans to donate to cancer funds on her birthday.

She speaks fluently in five languages: Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Punjabi, and English.
