Sophie Löwe: A Renowned German Soprano
Early Life and TrainingSophie Löwe was born on March 24, 1815, in Oldenburg, Germany, to actor Ferdinand Löwe. In 1831, she began her vocal training in Vienna under the tutelage of Italian tenor Giuseppe Ciccimarra, renowned for his interpretations of Rossini's operas.
Debut and Rising Stardom
Löwe made her debut in 1832 at the Kärntnertortheater, one of Vienna's most prestigious opera houses. After captivating audiences in a tour of Northern Germany, she joined the Berlin Court Opera in 1837, which later became the Berlin State Opera.
Notable Performances and Controversies
Throughout her career, Löwe's most celebrated performances included the title role in Gaetano Donizetti's "Maria Padilla" (1841), Elvira in Giuseppe Verdi's "Ernani" (1844), and Odabella in Verdi's "Attila" (1846). Her portrayal of Elvira in "Ernani" sparked a conflict with Verdi, leading to the composer's abrupt departure from Venice without the customary post-performance visit. Despite this, her talent and artistry were such that Verdi composed a major role in "Attila" for her two years later and praised her performance as Odabella.
Marriage and Later Years
In 1848, Löwe married Prince Friedrich Adalbert of Liechtenstein, the fourth son of Prince Johann I Joseph. The couple remained childless. Löwe passed away in Pest, Hungary, on November 29, 1866.
