Biography of Spiru Haret

Spiru Haret was a Romanian mathematician and astronomer. He was born on February 15, 1851 and passed away on December 17, 1912. Haret was known for his significant contributions to the field of astrology, particularly his discovery of the presence of large semi-major axes disturbances of third order. This discovery brought new insights to the world of astronomy and paved the way for further advancements.

Early Years and Education

From a young age, Spiru Haret showed a keen interest in mathematics. He delved deep into the subject and even published several textbooks while still a student. One book focused on algebra, while the other explored the mysteries of trigonometry. Haret completed these works during his time at school. In 1868, the talented mathematician enrolled at the University of Bucharest, where he continued his studies in the faculty of physics and mathematics.

Teaching and Career

In 1870, while studying as a second-year student, Haret also engaged in teaching at the Nifon Seminary in Bucharest. However, in 1871, he had to leave the university due to the time constraints of his studies, which he wanted to dedicate to his experiments and calculations. In 1874, Spiru Haret obtained his higher education degree and decided to relocate to Paris. He continued his academic journey at the renowned Sorbonne, receiving his diploma in mathematics in 1875 and in physics the following year. Two years later, he earned a doctorate in philosophy.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1878, Spiru Haret returned to his homeland, Romania. He temporarily set aside his research activities and focused on improving education in the country. Haret strongly believed that for people to lead better lives, they needed to be educated. Over time, he became a prominent political figure and implemented several educational reforms that provided more opportunities for the Romanian population in the field of education. Haret became a faculty member at the University of Bucharest's faculty of natural sciences and later became a member of the Romanian Academy. He retired in 1910.

Contributions and Legacy

Spiru Haret's most notable achievement was his discovery of large semi-major axes disturbances of third order in astronomical perturbations. This breakthrough had a profound impact on the field of astrology, leading to further discoveries and advancements. Haret continued his research until his last days, leaving behind numerous unfulfilled ideas. He passed away on December 1, 1912, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of mathematics and astronomy.
