Football Scandal Rocks Macedonia
Key FiguresThe Macedonian Football Federation (FFM) is embroiled in a scandal involving allegations of forged diplomas and improper conduct. The scandal has shaken the positions of FFM President Haralampe Hadzi-Risteski and General Secretary Lazar Mitrovski, who hired Srecko Katanec as the national team coach.
Alleged Forgery
According to Macedonian media, Mitrovski claimed to have a university degree from the University of Sarajevo. However, Sarajevo authorities confirmed that he did not graduate from the institution. Mitrovski is also alleged to have acquired another forged diploma from a lower-level institution.
Police Investigation
On Friday, police inspectors visited the FFM office to seize a copy of Mitrovski's personnel file. A subsequent investigation by government authorities on Monday led to a raid on the office, where documents were confiscated.
Katanec's Response
National team coach Srecko Katanec expressed his concerns, indicating that he may resign if Hadzi-Risteski leaves office. He emphasized that the departure of the president, with whom he had an agreement, would likely result in his own departure.
International Repercussions
The scandal could have far-reaching consequences. FIFA and UEFA are reportedly considering suspending Macedonian teams from international competitions, including the Euro 2008 qualifiers. This would have implications for the Russian national team, which has already faced the Macedonian team.
