Birth of a Child with Three Legs
In March 2017, Shrilata Kanchanapalli gave birth to a baby girl with an extra leg. The rare condition, known as polypedia, affects one in 100,000 births.
Surgical Removal
Doctors explained that the extra leg likely originated from a parasitic twin, and that it could be surgically removed. At just six days old, the baby girl underwent a three-hour procedure at Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad.
A Mother's Relief
Shrilata expressed her gratitude to the "god-sent" surgeons who successfully operated on her daughter. She remains confident that her child is now completely healthy.
Diagnosis and Treatment
During a routine scan in December 2016, Kanchanapalli learned of the fetal abnormality. Doctors determined that the extra limb was part of a parasitic twin that had failed to develop fully.
The Father's Perspective
The baby girl's father, Sambaiah, expressed his joy at his daughter being able to grow up normally. He initially expected to pay for the treatment, but was relieved when the hospital assured him that it would be free of charge.
A Similar Case
A month prior to the birth of Shrilata's daughter, a baby boy with four legs and two penises was born in the Indian state of Karnataka. The boy was diagnosed with polypedia, and his mother expressed her belief that he was a "god-given gift."
