Biography of Stanislav Chekan
Stanislav Chekan was a renowned actor and Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1955). He was born on June 2, 1922, in Rostov-on-Don. The life of Chekan took a turn when his father was arrested as an enemy of the people when he was just 15 years old. He was sent to a labor colony where he first started participating in amateur performances. However, on his way to a vocational school, he diverted to Rostov and enrolled in a theater institute (alongside Sergey Bondarchuk). From 1938 to 1941, he studied at the Y. Zavadsky Studio at the Theater School in Rostov-on-Don.
During World War II, Chekan served as an ordinary soldier after being wounded. From 1941 to 1945, he was an actor in a front theater. It was there that he met the artist Tina Mazenko-Belinskaya, who later became his wife. In 1945, he became an actor at the Odessa Theater of the Soviet Army, and from 1948 to 1956, he worked at the Central Academic Theater of the Soviet Army. From 1958 to 1993, he was part of the Theater-Studio of Film Actors. Chekan also made his mark in the film industry, starting in 1946 with his first significant role as Marchenko in the film "Zastava v gorakh" (1953).
In the 1960s, Chekan married Nonna Yulianovich, who was 17 years younger than him. He passed away on August 11, 1994, in Moscow and was buried at the Vagankovo Cemetery. As recalled by G. Agisheva, "Once he was sitting in a chair and suddenly said to his wife, 'You know, I no longer need to live. The profession is gone, and with it, everything is gone.' And it was pure truth." After his death, his son, Sergey Chekan, followed in his footsteps and became an actor. Sergey played several roles in films such as "Teni ischezayut v polden'" (Shadows Disappear at Noon), "Dva patrona na mamonta" (Two Cartridges for Mammoth), "Chernaya akula" (Black Shark), and "Vanka-Vstanka" (Vanka-Get Up). He was also an actor at the Moscow Gorky Theater. Sadly, in April 2005, it was reported by the media that Sergey Chekan, at the age of 44, had taken his own life.
