Biography of Stanislav Gurenko

Stanislav Gurenko is a Ukrainian politician who served as the last leader of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (1990-1991). He was born into a family of teachers and later graduated from the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. Gurenko started his career at the LKSMU Donetsk Machine-Building Plant in 1958 and worked his way up from an engineer-technologist to the director of the plant (1970-1976).

In 1963-1964, he also worked as a senior lecturer at the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute. His academic career, which started at DPI, continued with the defense of his doctoral dissertation on the topic "The Influence of an Automated Control System on Labor Productivity Growth in Machine-Building Enterprises." He successfully defended his dissertation in 1975 at the Institute of Industrial Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

In 1976, Gurenko transitioned to party and state work, beginning his career as a secretary of the Donetsk Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. From 1980 to 1987, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR. Additionally, in July-September 1986, he was the alternate deputy chairman of the State Commission in Chernobyl. He continued to rise within the party and state apparatus, becoming the secretary and 2nd secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine in 1987.

Gurenko was also a member of the Supreme Council of the Ukrainian SSR and the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1988-1991). The peak of his career in the party and state apparatus of the Soviet Union was his position as the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine (1990-1991) and his inclusion in the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

In independent Ukraine, Gurenko continued his political activities. In the 1990s, he served as an advisor to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine and was elected multiple times as a deputy from the Communist Party of Ukraine. Until January 1993, he was a People's Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and a member of the Commission on the Chernobyl Catastrophe. Gurenko returned to the Verkhovna Rada in 1998, becoming a People's Deputy of Ukraine of the 3rd and 4th convocations. In the Ukrainian parliament, he was a member of the Communist Party of Ukraine faction and held positions as the Chairman of the Committee on Economic Policy, Management of the National Economy, Property, and Investments (July 1998 - February 2000, May 2002 - May 2006) and a member of the same committee. He was also a member of the Council of the National Agency for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (June 1999 - May 2000).

In addition to his political activities, from 1991 to 1998, Gurenko worked as a scientific consultant for the NPK "Energiya" and Deputy Director of the SP "Navasko." He has been awarded the Orders of the October Revolution and the Red Banner of Labor.
