Biography of Stanislaw Kosior

Stanislaw Kosior was a political and state leader of the Soviet Union. He was born in 1889 in Ukraine to a Polish family. Kosior played a significant role in the Communist Party of Ukraine, serving as the secretary of the Central Committee from 1919 to 1920. In 1920, he became the commander of the Cavalry Labor Army and was responsible for the relocation of the Terek Cossacks from the Mountain Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

Leading Stalin's Policies

Kosior's influence grew, and in 1926, he became the secretary of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). By 1932, he held the position of the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Ukraine. Kosior actively implemented Stalin's policies in Ukraine and established his own mini-cult of personality, including naming the official radio station of Ukraine after himself.

Involvement in the Holodomor

During the devastating Holodomor famine of 1932-1933, caused by the consequences of mass collectivization, Kosior initiated the execution of numerous homeless children. This act further contributed to the suffering and death of millions of Ukrainians during the famine.

Fall from Power and Execution

In 1930, Kosior became a member of the Politburo, the highest decision-making body of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. However, his relationship with Joseph Stalin deteriorated when, in 1934, he and Chubar approached Sergei Kirov with a proposal to replace Stalin as the leader of the Soviet Union. Kirov refused the offer and reported the conversation to Stalin, which sealed Kosior's fate.

In 1938, Kosior was transferred to Moscow as the Deputy Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars, but without specific responsibilities. On May 3, 1938, he was stripped of all party positions, arrested, and on February 26, 1939, he was sentenced to death by firing squad. Kosior was executed on the same day.

Rehabilitation

It wasn't until March 14, 1956, that Stanislaw Kosior was posthumously rehabilitated, recognizing his wrongful conviction and execution.
