Early Life and Education
Born into a family of Ukrainian intelligentsia, Serhiy Vasyliovych Kulchytskyi pursued his education at the Taras Shevchenko Odessa National University, graduating from the Department of History. He later earned a postgraduate degree from the Institute of Economics, Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
Career at the National Academy of Sciences
Kulchytskyi's association with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) began in 1960. Holding several positions throughout his career, he became the Deputy Director of the Institute of Ukrainian History in 1991.
Academic Credentials and Recognition
Doctorate and Professorship:Kulchytskyi received his doctorate in historical sciences in 1978, followed by the title of professor in 1986.
Honors and Awards:His contributions to Ukrainian historiography earned him the title of Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine in 1996 and the State Prize of Ukraine in the Field of Science and Technology in 2001.
Communist Period
As a member of the Communist Party for three decades, Kulchytskyi specialized in the study of socialist industrialization. His doctoral dissertation focused on "Internal Resources of Socialist Industrialization (1925-1927)".
Defense of Soviet Policies:During this period, he actively defended Soviet policies, including the denial of organized famine. In his 1983 publication, "1933: Tragedy of Famine," he refuted the theory of the Holodomor as "deeply mistaken" and "irrational."
Post-Independence Historiography
Shift in Focus:After Ukraine's independence in 1991, Kulchytskyi underwent a significant shift in his research interests. He led the working group of historians for the Government Commission on the Activities of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists and Ukrainian Insurgent Army (OUN-UPA).
Heroization of OUN-UPA:Kulchytskyi's contemporary works have played a crucial role in the rehabilitation and glorification of the OUN-UPA, as well as the promotion of the "Holodomor-Genocide of the Ukrainian People" theory.
Legacy and Impact
Academic Legacy:Kulchytskyi has supervised the academic development of 27 candidates and 14 doctors of historical sciences.
Voluminous Publications:His prolific career has resulted in over 1,500 publications, including 42 books, over 70 chapters in collective works, and more than 500 articles in newspapers.
Educational Materials:Kulchytskyi has authored numerous textbooks and monographs used in Ukrainian education at both secondary and higher levels.
