Early Life
Ludwik Piotrowicz was born on March 8, 1865, in Wadowice, Poland, to Karol and Maria Piotrowicz. His father was a landowner. Piotrowicz attended the prestigious gymnasium in Wadowice and graduated with honors in 1887.
Education and Career
Academic StudiesIn 1887, Piotrowicz enrolled at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, where he studied classical and Slavic philology. He later continued his studies at the universities of Berlin and Göttingen. In 1893, he received his doctorate in philology from the Jagiellonian University.
Teaching and Research
Piotrowicz taught ancient languages in gymnasiums. In 1898, he defended his habilitation thesis at the University of Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine). He went on to become an extraordinary professor in 1902 and an ordinary professor in 1905.
Piotrowicz's research interests included papyrology, Hellenism, Polish-Latin literature, and the history of ancient Rome. His book "Historiografia grecka i nauki pokrewne" (Greek Historiography and Related Sciences) published in 1930, was the first European synthesis on the subject.
Literary Contributions
From 1902 to 1909, Piotrowicz served as the editor-in-chief of the literary journal "Eos."
Honors and Legacy
Scientific SocietiesPiotrowicz was a member of the Scientific Societies in Kraków (from 1914), Lwów (from 1920), and Warsaw (from 1945).
Awards
In 1929, he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
Students
Notable students of Piotrowicz include Andrzej Gawroński, Tadeusz Kotarbiński, and Franciszek Smólski.
Death and Legacy
Ludwik Piotrowicz died on February 22, 1944, in Warsaw, Poland. He left behind a significant legacy as one of the founders of Polish papyrology and a respected classicist.
