Friedrich Heinrich Karl Freiherr von Fallmerayer
Early Life and EducationFriedrich Heinrich Karl Freiherr von Fallmerayer was born on December 4, 1790, in Tschötsch bei Brixen, Tyrol. He studied law at the University of Leipzig from 1810 to 1814.
Legal and Academic Career
After completing his legal studies, Fallmerayer practiced as a lawyer from 1824 onwards. He also taught at the University of Munich from 1835 to 1846.
Study of Modern Greek Folklore
However, Fallmerayer's true passion lay in the study of Modern Greek folklore. In 1827, he published his first collection of Modern Greek folk songs, "Neugriechische Volkslieder im Original und mit deutscher Übersetzung." He followed this up with several other collections, including "Neugriechische Volkslieder" in 1849 and "Anthologie neugriechischer Volkslieder" in 1861.
Translations and Commentaries
Fallmerayer also translated and annotated Alexander Soutzos's "Panorama of Greece." He also prepared a "Pocket German-Modern Greek Dictionary" in 1841.
Historical Writings
In addition to his work on folklore, Fallmerayer wrote a history of the Greek Revolution, entitled "Geschichte der griechischen Revolution," which was published in 1833.
