Moldavian Translator to Mazepa

In 1691, Zertís joined the entourage of Ivan Mazepa, the Hetman of the Ukrainian Cossacks, as a translator proficient in Moldavian, Greek, and Turkish.

Loyalty to Mazepa

When Mazepa aligned with Charles XII of Sweden, Zertís remained in Baturyn, the Cossack capital. He vehemently urged Ukrainian authorities to resist Mazepa's plans, an act that led to his imprisonment and chaining to a cannon. He was only freed after Baturyn fell to Russian forces.

Father of Archbishop Ambrose

Zertís's legacy extended beyond his association with Mazepa. He was the father of Ambrose, who became Archbishop of Moscow. Tragically, Ambrose perished during the Moscow Plague Riots of 1771.
