Education and Military Service

Born in Austria to a farming family, Stefan Tauschitz attended secondary school in Klagenfurt before pursuing higher education at the Vienna University of Technology. In 1922, he graduated with a degree in engineering. During the First World War (1914-1918), Tauschitz served as a captain in the Austrian army and was wounded in Serbia.

Political Career in Carinthia

After the war, Tauschitz became involved in politics, joining the Agrarian League in 1927. He served as a member of the Carinthian Landtag from 1927 to 1930 and became its president in 1931. Tauschitz also represented Carinthia in the Austrian National Council from 1927 to 1934, serving as the third president of the council from 1931 to 1932.

Diplomatic Roles

In 1933, Tauschitz was appointed as Austria's ambassador to Berlin and Kaunas. He later held the position of State Secretary for Foreign Affairs in the Federal Government from July 10 to August 3, 1934.

Post-War Career

Following the Anschluss of Austria into Nazi Germany in 1938, Tauschitz was arrested and imprisoned by the Gestapo. After the war, he resumed his political career, becoming the governor of Carinthia in May 1945. In 1950, he re-entered the diplomatic service and served as minister and ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Athens.

Retirement and Legacy

Tauschitz retired from the diplomatic service on December 31, 1954, and resigned from his political post on February 28, 1955. He remained an influential figure in Austrian politics and diplomacy throughout his life.
