Stephen D. Krasner

Early Life and Education

Stephen D. Krasner was born on February 15, 1942, in New York City. He grew up in Manhattan and earned his BA in History from Cornell University in 1963, where he was a member of the Quill and Dagger society. He received an MA from Columbia University and in 1972 earned his PhD from Harvard University. His doctoral dissertation examined the international coffee market, and he was influenced by Albert Hirschman during his time at Harvard.

Career

Prior to joining Stanford University in 1981, Krasner taught at Harvard University and the University of California, Los Angeles. He served as editor of the journal International Organization from 1986 to 1992.

Krasner has authored six books and over ninety academic articles. At Stanford University, he taught courses in international relations, international political economy, international relations theory, policy making, and state-building. He was awarded the Dean's Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1991. Krasner served as an advisor to Daniel Drezner at Stanford.

Krasner played a pivotal role in establishing regime theory as a significant area of study in international relations, notably through his co-edited volume "International Regimes" (1983). He is also a key figure in the development of hegemonic stability theory, influenced by Robert Gilpin.

Krasner's research has extensively explored sovereignty and statehood. He is credited with introducing the concept of punctuated equilibrium into the social sciences and contributing to tipping point theory.

Krasner is a senior fellow at the Stanford University Hoover Institution. He was appointed Director of Policy Planning in the U.S. Department of State by his former Stanford colleague Condoleezza Rice.

Political Stance

In 2020, Krasner co-signed a statement with over 130 other former Republican national security officials asserting that President Trump was unfit to serve another term in office. The statement concluded that "to that end, we strongly urge that it is in the best interests of our nation that Vice President Joe Biden be elected the next President of the United States, and we will vote for him."
