Early Life and EducationStephen Nickell, a renowned British economist, began his academic journey at a school in Northwood. He later attended Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he pursued mathematics. Subsequently, he continued his studies at the London School of Economics, where he excelled by winning the Ely Devons Prize.
Academic Career
From 1970 to 1984, Nickell held the position of Lecturer and then Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics. In 1998, he returned to his alma mater, where he remained until 2006.
Oxford University and MPC
From 1984 to 1998, Nickell served as Professor at Nuffield College and the University of Oxford. He also directed the Oxford Institute of Economics and Statistics. In June 2000, he became a member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at the Bank of England, a role he held until May 2006.
Research and Honors
In 2004, Nickell became a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor. In 2006, he was appointed Warden of Nuffield College. A year later, he was bestowed the honor of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.
Professional Affiliations and Recognition
Nickell has held prestigious memberships in various organizations, including the British Academy, the Econometric Society, and the American Economic Association as an honorary foreign member. He has also served as President of the Royal Economic Society.
