Born on October 21, 1941, in the small town of Willow Springs, Missouri, Steve Cropper is an American soul guitarist who continues to be one of the driving forces in the music scene today. Known for his virtuosity in almost every genre, Cropper remains a producer and co-writer for many projects.
Early Life and Musical Aspirations
Cropper's passion for music began to emerge at a young age. When he was fourteen years old, he ordered his first Gibson guitar by mail to play with local musicians. Eventually, his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where Cropper's musical journey took off.
Breakthrough with "Booker T. & the MG's"
In the early 1960s, Cropper gained recognition by playing with "The Mar-Keys," the most successful band from Memphis at the time. He then went on to form and become a member of the soul group "Booker T. & the MG's." Their accidental hit "Green Onions," created during a traffic jam in Tennessee, exploded on the charts in 1962. Cropper's role in this group not only showcased his talent as a guitarist and arranger but also as a poet-songwriter. He co-wrote the renowned hit "In the Midnight Hour."
Producer and Collaborator
After "Booker T. & the MG's" disbanded, Cropper dedicated nearly a decade to producing records for Jeff Beck, Mitch Ryder, and other musicians. In the 1980s, he signed with Stax Records, a record company he helped establish, and achieved a new wave of popularity among a younger audience.
The Blues Brothers and Continuing Success
Collaborating with John Belushi, Cropper played with "The Blues Brothers," one of the most popular groups of that time, recording several albums and a film together. In the following decades, Cropper remained in high demand as a producer and co-writer, but his name as a performing artist lost some of its popularity. However, everything changed with the release of the album "Nudge It Up a Notch" in 2008. Created by Cropper and frontman Felix Cavaliere of "The Rascals," this album was recorded in Nashville at Hormone Studio and released by Stax Records.

Today, Steve Cropper continues to be one of the main driving forces in the music scene. He is a virtuoso performer in almost every genre and remains a producer and co-writer for many projects.
