Steve Harkness: A Dedicated Footballer
Steve Harkness, a renowned English footballer, made his mark as a left-back and midfielder, particularly during his time with Liverpool Football Club.
Early Career: Carlisle United and Liverpool
Harkness' football journey began with Carlisle United, his hometown club, where he signed a contract in March 1989. Despite playing only 13 matches, his impressive performances caught the attention of Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish, who acquired his services for £75,000 in July of the same year.
Liverpool Years and Transfer to Benfica
Harkness made his Liverpool debut in August 1991. However, despite being a fan favorite, he struggled to secure a regular place in the starting lineup, appearing in just over 100 league matches during his eight years with the club. After Gérard Houllier became manager in 1998, Harkness was sold to Benfica for £750,000, where he briefly reunited with former Liverpool boss Graeme Souness.
Interludes: Back to England
Harkness' stay in Portugal proved to be short-lived, as he returned to England just five months later, joining Blackburn Rovers for £400,000, Souness having taken over as manager there. Despite making his debut in November 1999, Blackburn's disappointing season led to his release.
Sheffield Wednesday and Chester City
In 2000, Harkness signed for Sheffield Wednesday for £200,000. However, injuries plagued him throughout his two years with the club, limiting him to only 32 appearances. Seeking a new challenge, he joined Chester City in 2002, where his former Liverpool teammate Mark Wright became player-manager.
Retirement
After a brief stint with Chester, Harkness announced his retirement from professional football in November 2002, ending a distinguished career marked by determination and passion for the game.
