Steve Hogarth Biography
Steve Hogarth, a British musician, is best known as the lead vocalist, keyboardist, and guitarist of the British rock band 'Marillion'. Born in Kendal, Cumbria, England, Hogarth's father was an engineer for the British merchant fleet. He developed an interest in music from an early age, with 'The Beatles' and 'The Kinks' having a significant influence on him during his childhood. Hogarth taught himself to play the piano and continued his musical journey after leaving school.
Early Career
After school, Hogarth spent three years studying electrical engineering at Trent Polytechnic. During this time, he was a member of the band 'Harlow', primarily performing in clubs. In 1978, the band even released a single called 'Harry de Mazzio', but they disbanded in 1981. In the same year, Hogarth left electrical engineering and moved to London to pursue a career in music. He joined the band 'Motion Pictures', later renamed 'The Europeans'. Hogarth was responsible for advertising in music publications for the group. 'The Europeans' released two studio albums and one live album, with Hogarth singing in only one song from the first album and five out of eight songs from the second.
'How We Live' and 'Marillion'
In 1985, Hogarth and guitarist Colin Woore left 'The Europeans' and formed their own duo called 'How We Live'. They signed a contract with Columbia Records. However, their debut album, 'Dry Land', failed to gain much attention due to a lack of proper promotion. Disillusioned, Hogarth even considered leaving the music industry to become a postman or milkman. However, a meeting with publishers and valuable connections led him to a new idea - joining the band 'Marillion'. Hogarth's incredible voice impressed the band members, and they offered him a place in the group. Although hesitant at first, Hogarth agreed, especially after realizing that 'Marillion' saw him as an equal partner. In 1989, 'Seasons End', the band's fifth studio album and the first recorded with Hogarth, was released. The trial collaboration was a success, and to date, 'Marillion' has released 12 albums featuring Hogarth's vocals. Currently, 'Marillion' is working on their new album set to be released in 2012.
Solo and Other Projects
Hogarth also pursued a solo career under the pseudonym 'h' and released an album called 'Ice Cream Genius'. He collaborated with former 'Japan' and 'Porcupine Tree' keyboardist Richard Barbieri, former 'XTC' guitarist Dave Gregory, 'Blondie' drummer Clem Burke, bassist Chucho Merchan, and drummer Luis Jardim. Hogarth also worked on the project 'The H-Band', which actively toured the UK and Europe. The band included musicians such as Aziz Ibrahim from 'The Stone Roses MKII', drummer Andy Gangadeen, bassist Jingles, and cellist Stephanie Sobey-Jones. The band released their first album in 2002, with plans for a second album in December 2004. Hogarth continues to balance his solo career with his work in 'Marillion' and has undertaken several successful tours throughout the UK and Europe.
