Biography of Steve Madden
Steve Madden, an American businessman, broker, and the founder of the shoe company "Steven Madden, Ltd.", was born in 1958 in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. He grew up in Lawrence, Nassau County, NY, in a family with Irish and Jewish roots. Madden has two older brothers.

Founding of Steven Madden, Ltd.
In 1990, Madden founded his shoe company with just $1,100, initially selling shoes out of the trunk of his car. Over the years, the company grew rapidly, and by 2012, "Steven Madden, Ltd." had become a globally recognized brand, generating a profit of $1.23 billion.

Involvement in Fraudulent Activities
However, Madden's financial affairs became intertwined with a brokerage firm called "Stratton Oakmont" located on Long Island. This firm was involved in manipulating and dumping stocks and other securities. Madden's childhood friend, Danny Porush, was a co-founder of this company.

In 2000, Madden faced a collective lawsuit accusing him of providing false information, leading to financial losses for investors. The situation was eventually resolved in 2004, with Madden paying a settlement of $9 million.
In 2001, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed charges against Madden in a federal court in New York. Although the charges were not criminal in nature, Madden agreed to pay a $1.637 million fine and fulfill the obligations imposed by civil sanctions.
In 2002, Madden was convicted of stock manipulation, monetary fraud, and securities fraud. He was sentenced to 41 months in prison, removed from his position as CEO of "Steven Madden, Ltd.", and expelled from the company's board of directors. However, Madden later returned to the company as a creative consultant while serving his prison sentence and managed to earn $700,000.
Current Status and Impact
Madden was released from prison in April 2005 and spent some time in a New York rehabilitation house for former inmates. According to his lawyer, Joel Winograd, Madden spent 60 days at the rehabilitation center. Afterward, he was placed under house arrest for a certain period of time.
Steve Madden's role was portrayed by Jake Hoffman in Martin Scorsese's crime drama "The Wolf of Wall Street", based on Jordan Belfort's memoirs. Unlike Madden, Belfort, a former broker, served 22 months in prison for his fraudulent activities.
Currently, the brand "Steve Madden" operates approximately 100 retail stores in the United States, and its main product catalog includes three additional lines: "Madden Girl", "STEVEN by Steve Madden", and "Freebird by Steven". Internationally, the "Steven Madden" brand is present in over 55 countries, with around 185 retail stores and 180 concession-based trade points.
