Steve Zahn is an American comedic theater and film actor. He has appeared in numerous films, but is best remembered for his portrayal of the dim-witted everyman character.
Early Life
Steve James Zahn was born on November 13, 1967, in Marshall, Minnesota. He was raised in a family of Elizabeth Claire (née Geist), who worked for the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), and James Edward Zahn, a retired Lutheran pastor. He spent his early years in Mankato, Minnesota, where he attended Kennedy Elementary School. He later attended Robbinsdale Cooper High School. After graduating, Steve went on to study at Gustavus Adolphus College and then enrolled in the American Repertory Theater's Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard University.
Career
Steve Zahn began his professional acting career in a Minnesota production of "Biloxi Blues" at the Old Log Theater. However, his breakthrough came in 1994 when he caught the attention of Ben Stiller, who cast him in the film "Reality Bites." From then on, Zahn juggled between film projects, Broadway shows, and television appearances. He toured with the production of "Bye Bye Birdie" alongside Tommy Tune, Ann Reinking, and Mark Kudish in 1992-1993. He also had a memorable guest role as Duncan, Phoebe Buffay's husband, on the hit TV show "Friends".
During the mid-1990s, Zahn appeared in several films, including Tom Hanks' project "That Thing You Do". These roles not only provided him with valuable experience but also laid a solid foundation for future opportunities. One such opportunity was the lead role in the indie film "Happy, Texas" in 1999. In the last decade, Zahn has starred in notable films such as "National Security" (2003), "Daddy Day Care" (2003), and "Sahara" (2005).
Personal Life
Behind the scenes and away from the cameras, Steve Zahn is a passionate fisherman. He also owns a farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Zahn is married to actress Robin Peterman, the daughter of John Peterman whom Steve met during the production of "Bye Bye Birdie". The couple has two children: son Joel Steven Zahn (born April 3, 2000, in New York) and daughter Audrey Robin. In 2004, the family moved to a small horse farm in Georgetown, Kentucky, Robin's hometown. Steve maintains a warm friendship with his "That Thing You Do" co-star Tom Everett Scott, whom he had the honor of serving as best man at his wedding.
