His parents, Pauline and Alfred, raised him in a working-class family, with his father working as a tailor. From 1948 to 1950, Berkoff attended a grammar school before enrolling in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he graduated in 1958.

While his education was considered prestigious, Berkoff felt the need for further training. He decided to pursue his studies in Paris and graduated from a well-known school there in 1965. It was during this time that he began his career in theatre, performing in various productions of works by Kafka, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, and other literary classics.
