Early Life and Career

Steven Defour was born on April 15, 1988, in Mechelen, Belgium. His football journey began with Zennester Hombeek, a local youth team. He later joined Mechelen and then moved to Genk's youth academy in 2002.

Debut at Genk

On October 30, 2004, at just 16 years old, Defour made his debut for Genk's first team, coming off the bench in a 1-0 victory over Sint-Truidense. Although his debut season saw limited playing time, he became a regular starter the following year.

Breakthrough and Golden Boot

In the 2005/2006 season, Defour established himself as a key player for Genk, registering five assists and one goal. His performances caught the attention of European clubs, including Ajax. However, a proposed move to Ajax fell through, and Defour opted to stay in Belgium.

Move to Standard Liège

After his contract with Genk expired, Defour signed a five-year deal with Standard Liège in 2006. In 2007/2008, at the age of 19, he won the Belgian Golden Boot, becoming the league's most valuable player. He later became Standard's captain.

National Team Debut

In May 2006, Defour received his first call-up to the Belgian national team, making his debut against Saudi Arabia.

European Interests

In the 2009 summer transfer window, several European clubs expressed interest in acquiring Defour, but Standard refused all offers. In 2011, Russian clubs Spartak Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow pursued him, but he declined both offers.

Later Career

Defour played for Porto, Burnley, and Antwerp later in his career. He played over 50 times for the Belgian national team and is remembered as one of Belgium's most talented midfielders of his generation.
