British Armed Robber Caught in Spain with 75 Fake IDs
Arrest in MarbellaBritish armed robber Stevie Atkins, wanted in connection with an armed cash-in-transit heist, was arrested in Marbella, Spain, after he was found with 75 fake identity documents. Atkins was taken into custody on May 8, 2018, around 2 am by the Spanish National Police Patrol. When officers stopped the 36-year-old to check his identification, they suspected his documents were forged. A database search revealed that he was wanted in the UK.
According to Spanish police, Atkins was in possession of an astounding 75 fake IDs. He attempted to bribe officers with €500 for his release, leading to an additional charge of attempted bribery.
Earlier Arrest and Incarceration
In March 2018, Essex Police issued an appeal to the public for help in finding Atkins, stating that there were links to Mijas and that he was likely to be traveling towards the Costa del Sol. Atkins is described as 6 feet 4 inches tall, muscular, with a prominent scar under his right eye and an ethnic tattoo on his left arm. Essex Police also released two photographs of Atkins.
The Robbery
On December 14, 2016, an armed robbery of a cash-in-transit van occurred near a supermarket in Witham, Essex. Two masked men, armed with sawn-off shotguns, confronted the guards as the van stopped to replenish a cash machine.
One guard was forced to kneel while the other was ordered to hand over all the cash inside the van. No shots were fired, and no one was injured during the incident. The robbers escaped with £235,000 in a BMW getaway car, driven by an accomplice.
Last summer, 29-year-old Joe Turner of Dagenham was arrested and pleaded guilty to participating in the robbery. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
