Birth and Early Life

Born on August 29, 1934, in South Africa, Steve Arneil embarked on his martial arts journey at the tender age of 16. By the time he turned 17, he had already earned a black belt in judo. Arneil later delved into the intricacies of Chinese kempo.

Arrival in Japan and Encounter with Mas Oyama

In 1962, inspired by the legendary Mas Oyama, Arneil made the arduous journey to Japan. Upon his arrival at Oyama's Honbu-do dojo, he was greeted with a stern warning: "If you wish to train in Kyokushin Karate, you must be prepared to dedicate your entire life to it." Undeterred, Arneil became a devoted student.

The 100-Man Kumite: A Test of Will and Courage

After years of rigorous training, Oyama summoned Arneil, then a 2nd dan, and announced an extraordinary test of fortitude: a fight against 100 opponents. The exact date remained unknown, adding to the intimidating nature of the challenge. Arneil's initial reaction was one of disbelief, but Oyama's unwavering belief propelled him forward.

Triumph and Recognition

With unwavering determination, Arneil emerged as the first of Oyama's students to successfully complete the 100-man kumite. The accomplishment earned him a coveted 3rd dan and cemented his reputation as a true warrior.

Spreading the Flames of Kyokushin in the United Kingdom

In 1965, Oyama entrusted Arneil with the mission of disseminating Kyokushin Karate in the United Kingdom. Teaming up with his close friend Bob Bolton, Arneil established the London Karate School, where the training was as relentless as the battles that followed.

Coaching the British Karate Team

From 1968 to 1976, Arneil assumed the role of manager and coach of the British Karate Team. Under his guidance, the team achieved remarkable success, culminating in their triumph as World Karate Champions in Long Beach, California, in 1975.

Founding the International Federation of Karate (IFK)

In 1991, Arneil departed from IKO and founded the International Federation of Karate (IFK). Today, the organization he created stands as a dominant force in British Karate, boasting over 50 thriving clubs.
