Early Life and Education

Stojan Andov, born into a family of farmers in the village of Teovo, completed his economics degree from the University of Skopje. He later pursued a master's degree at the University of Belgrade.

Political Career in Yugoslavia

Andov's political journey commenced in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He held various roles, including Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Macedonia, a member of the Macedonian delegation to the Assembly of Republics and Provinces of Yugoslavia, and a member of the federal government. From 1987 to 1991, he served as SFRY ambassador to Iraq.

Return to Macedonia and Liberal Party Leadership

After returning to Macedonia, Andov established the Alliance of Democratic Forces, a branch of the party led by Yugoslav reformist Prime Minister Ante Marković. He subsequently renamed the party the Liberal Party of Macedonia, serving as its chairman to this day. In 1999, he ran for President of Macedonia as a candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party.

Parliamentary Leadership and Alliances

In the 1990 parliamentary elections, held prior to Macedonia's independence, the Liberal Party won 18 seats, leading to Andov's election as Chairman of the Assembly of Macedonia. He initially collaborated with the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), forming the "Alliance for Macedonia" electoral bloc in 1994. The alliance won the subsequent parliamentary elections, resulting in Andov's reappointment as Chairman of the Assembly. However, the coalition dissolved in 1996, with many observers attributing its collapse to the SDSM's unease with Andov's growing popularity.

Acting Head of State and Controversy

In October 1995, following an assassination attempt on President Kiro Gligorov, Andov became Acting Head of State. His effective handling of this role prompted the post-communists to seek the election of their own representative, Tito Petkovski, as Speaker of the Assembly.

Return to Parliamentary Leadership and Ministerial Role

In 2000, Andov was re-elected as Chairman of the Assembly after his party joined a government coalition with the VMRO-DPMNE party. He held this position until 2002, when the SDSM returned to power. Andov is currently the longest-serving member of the Assembly of Macedonia, and his party continues to be part of the governing coalition.
