Early Life and Club Career
Sunday Oliseh was born in Abavo, Nigeria, on September 14, 1974. He began his football career at age 16 with Julius Berger. In 1990, he moved to Belgium with his parents and played for Liège. After three games, Oliseh became a regular starter, making 75 appearances and scoring three goals in four years.
Rise to Stardom in Italy, Germany, and the Netherlands
Oliseh joined Reggina in Italy in 1994, playing 29 matches and scoring once. After Reggina's relegation, he moved to Köln in Germany in 1995. In two years, he made 54 appearances and scored five goals, catching the attention of Ajax Amsterdam.
In Amsterdam, Oliseh became a key player, winning the Dutch league title in 1998 and the Dutch Cup twice. His performances led to a move to Juventus in Italy in 1999, but he failed to break into the starting XI.
Borussia Dortmund and the Peak of His Career
In 2000, Oliseh signed for Borussia Dortmund for a fee of $6.8 million. He helped the team finish third in the 2000/2001 season, qualifying for the Champions League. In the following Champions League campaign, Oliseh scored a crucial goal in the qualifying round against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Despite reaching the UEFA Cup Final that season, Oliseh's Dortmund team won the Bundesliga in 2002. However, his contract was terminated in 2005.
Later Career and International Success
Oliseh joined Genk in Belgium in 2005 but retired in 2006 due to personal reasons.
With the Nigerian national team, Oliseh debuted in 1993 and won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994. He also captained the team to victory at the 1996 Olympic Games and played in the 1998 World Cup.
Coaching Career
After his retirement, Oliseh began his coaching career with Belgian third-division side Virton in 2008.
