Martin Skrtel - Slovak Footballer, Defender for Liverpool
Martin Skrtel is a Slovak footballer who currently plays as a defender for Liverpool and the Slovak national team. He began playing football at the age of 6 and was a product of the youth academy of Prievidza, where he played as a defender and defensive midfielder. He later played for Trencin before making a move to Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2004.

Success at Zenit Saint Petersburg
Skrtel made his debut for Zenit in July 2004 in a Russian Cup match against Omsk Irtish, and he spent 4 seasons at the club. He played a total of 113 matches, scoring 5 goals, including 74 matches and 3 goals in the Russian Premier League. In 2007, he won the Russian Premier League title with Zenit.

Move to Liverpool
In early 2008, Skrtel attracted interest from European clubs such as Valencia, Newcastle, Tottenham, Everton, and Liverpool. On January 11, 2008, he transferred to Liverpool for a reported fee of £6.5 million. Skrtel impressed Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez during the negotiations, which played a decisive role in his choice to join the club. Benitez praised Skrtel's persistence, speed, and aerial ability, comparing him to Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher. Skrtel was given the number 37 shirt, previously worn by Jari Litmanen and Zak Whitbread.
Success at Liverpool
Skrtel made his full debut for Liverpool on January 26, 2008, in a match against Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Cup fourth round. He quickly established himself as a key player, featuring in important matches against Chelsea, Manchester United, Everton, and Arsenal in his first three months with the club. Skrtel was named the man of the match by Liverpool fans after his performance in the Merseyside derby. In 2009, he continued to be a regular substitute despite facing competition from Daniel Agger.
International Career and Personal Life
Skrtel has represented the Slovak national team since making his debut in 2004. He has also played for the Slovak youth team. Outside of football, Skrtel enjoys tennis, skiing, and hockey. He is currently single.
Records and Achievements
Skrtel's move to Liverpool for €10 million set two records - he became the most expensive defender in Liverpool's history and the most expensive player in Slovak football history. The previous record was held by Shilard Nemeth, for whom Middlesbrough paid €6.75 million to Inter Bratislava in 2001.
Skrtel has also been recognized for his individual achievements, including winning the Peter Dubovsky Award for the best Slovak footballer under 21 in 2005. He was also named the best player in the Slovak First League in the 2002-2003 season. Skrtel has consistently been ranked among the top footballers in Slovakia, with rankings of 5th in 2005, 2nd in 2006, and 1st in 2007. He has also been listed as one of the top 33 players in the Russian Premier League, ranking 3rd in 2006.
