Early Life and Career

Sunil Bharti Mittal was born in 1957 as the son of a politician. At the age of 26, he started his first business in 1976 with a loan of $1,500 from his father. The business, which involved producing bicycle parts for a local factory, was short-lived as he successfully sold it to a local spinning mill in 1980.

In 1982, Sunil became an official dealer for the Japanese company Suzuki and organized the import of portable generators to India. Taking advantage of the ban on telecommunications equipment imports imposed by the government, Sunil ventured into the production of button-based portable telephones. From that point on, telecommunications and equipment manufacturing became the focal point of his business and continue to be the main driver of his company's growth.
