Roman Golovchenko: A Political Ascent

Early Life and Education

Roman Golovchenko was born on August 10, 1973, in Zhodino, Belarus, and went to live in Minsk in 1983. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1996 and the Academy of Management under the President of the Republic of Belarus in 2003.

Government Career

Government Secretariat of the Security Council (1997-2002)

Golovchenko's political career began in 1997 as a chief specialist at the State Secretariat of the Security Council of Belarus.

General Prosecutor's Office (2002-2005)

He then served as Deputy Head of the General Prosecutor's Office of Belarus from 2002 to 2005.

Presidential Administration and Security Council (2005-2009)

Golovchenko's subsequent roles included:

Chief Advisor in the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration (2005-2006)

Chief Advisor in the Department of International Cooperation in Security and the Department of International Security within the State Secretariat of the Security Council (2006-2009)

Counselor and Minister at the Belarusian Embassy in Poland (2009)

First Deputy Chairman of the State Military-Industrial Committee (2009-2013)

Ambassador to the UAE and Head of the Military-Industrial Committee (2013-2020)

From 2013 to 2018, Golovchenko served as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Belarus to the United Arab Emirates, concurrently representing Belarus in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. After returning to Belarus, he became the Chairman of the State Military-Industrial Committee from 2018 to 2020.

Prime Minister of Belarus (2020-Present)

Golovchenko was appointed Prime Minister of Belarus on June 4, 2020. He has been under Canadian sanctions since June 2022.

Personal Life

Roman Golovchenko is fluent in English, Arabic, German, and Polish. He has a son, Georgy, from his first marriage, and two daughters from his second marriage.
